The music program at Immaculate Heart of Mary School seeks to develop a love of music in every child. Through performance, students demonstrate the mastery of music skills and the learning of the musical language. They are engaged in music activities such as singing, moving, and the playing of musical instruments using Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze instructional approaches. In addition, and through the use of digital platforms, students learn to compose songs, improvise, and critically analyze musical performances.
Students gain a rich perspective on music traditions from around the world. They make cultural connections locally and globally. They also learn to make interdisciplinary connections. Further, students explore their Catholic identity by actively participating in school-sponsored masses and by studying the extensive music tradition of the Catholic Church.
The program follows guidelines set by the Archdiocese of New York and the New York State Learning Standards in the Arts. The music processes addressed in these guidelines include: creating, performing, responding, and connecting to artistic work.
